We have already seen how the battle for our souls (and the souls of those in our family) is already upon us. The war is raging on and we have to decide how we will fight back. In the end, our goal should be to be the best warrior we can be. That way we can ensure victory and save our soul from defeat.

A good image to have in mind is the precision and effectiveness of the Polish Hussars of ages past. They were considered the “elite” calvary of the Polish army between the 16th and 18th centuries. They had immense success and were feared by many opposing forces. Their primary weapon was a lance and wore their famous “wings” on their armor which some claim were used to strike fear in their enemy.
One of their most celebrated victories was in the Battle of Vienna, where Jan Sobieski rode forth with 3,000 Hussars to meet the Ottoman Turks and drove them back, preventing them from invading the rest of Europe. In fact, their victory is celebrated every year on September 12h, the feast of the Holy Name of Mary. One of the reasons for the feast in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mother was that Jan Sobieski entrusted the care of his troops to the Blessed Mother by leaving for Vienna from the Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa.
We can learn a lot from the Hussars and apply it to the spiritual battle that is upon us (which I will do in a separate post). For now, let us be encouraged and rally up our strength to fight the good fight. In the end, victory is only possible through the power and strength of God and we must realize that whatever weaknesses we have, God is the one who supplies what is lacking. He will reign victorious.
Let us be Spiritual Hussars and cry out “Jezus Maria ratuj!” (Jesus, Mary, Save!)
