As I began to dig deeper into the reality of spiritual warfare, I put myself on a quest to find the best resources. Providentially, I was given a book by a fellow parishioner that I now use every day in my fight against Satan: the Manual for Spiritual Warfare by Paul Thigpen.

It has proved to be a vital tool in combating the many assaults of the Enemy.
While searching for a book on “spiritual warfare,” the list is rather short. Actually, what I found is that there are more protestant books on the subject than Catholic ones. That is why I am thankful to Tan Books for publishing this beautiful Manual.
Rich Content
To start out, the Manual for Spiritual Warfare has two main sections. The first is entitled “Preparing for Battle” and provides a firm foundation for the book. It goes through the rich 2,000 year history of spiritual warfare in the Church and gives you the knowledge necessary to understand what kind of battle you are in.
Part One answers such questions as:
– Who is Satan, and what powers does he have?
– What are his typical strategies?
– Who fights him alongside us in battle?
– What spiritual weapons and armor do we possess?
– How do we keep the Enemy out of our camp?
I found it very helpful to read this first section and it helped clarify many aspects of spiritual warfare that I had not thought of before.
The second half of the book is entitled “Aids in Battle” and is a comprehensive compilation of prayers that everyone needs to combat the Enemy. Going through this section is like going through an armory and picking which sword you need to fight. It provides you with:
– Teaching about spiritual warfare from Scripture and Church documents
– Scripture verses for battle
– Wisdom and inspiration from saints who fought Satan
– Prayers for protection, deliverance, and victory
– Rosary meditations, hymns, and other devotions for spiritual combat
Personally, I use this section every day. There is a section on “Prayers for the Family and Home“ and as a husband and father, I see it as my duty to protect my family from the daily spiritual assaults that come each day. There are also many other prayers, most of them very ancient, that remind us that we are in the middle of a war and that war is for our soul.
A Work of Art
Another aspect of this book that I enjoy is that Tan Books produced it in such a way that it feels ancient and part of a long tradition. It is leather-bound and very attractive. What I like about it is that they made it very portable, so that you can take this manual with you wherever you go.
Personally, I have taken it on trips with me, knowing that I do not know what sort of activities have occurred in different hotel rooms and who may be lurking around in the shadows.
Additionally, it is a book that feels like a manual on spiritual warfare.
Summary
In the end, it is a treasure that I encourage everyone to have. We live in a world where the Devil is using all of his power to seduce and so we must be on our guard. We must be ready. So order a copy today!
